When the general public speaks about cannabis, they refer to Indica or Sativa strains. Hybrid weed seeds are yet another type of marijuana strain, and they should never be overlooked. As the name hints, hybrids are cannabis strains that combine the genetics of Indica and Sativa, and there are some things to learn about this type of marijuana.

Understanding Hybrid Weed Seeds

As mentioned above, hybrid strain seeds are a combination of Indica and Sativa strain seed genetics. They are usually classified as Indica-dominant, Sativa-dominant, or balanced. Indica-dominant and Sativa-dominant have a larger amount of Indica and Sativa genetics, respectively. Truly balanced Hybrid cannabis strains have an approximately 50:50 ratio of Sativa and Indica genetics.

Hybrids may also have some genetics from the Ruderalis plant, a type of cannabis strain that is bred with Sativa and Indica strains to produce auto-flower-cannabis seeds.

Since hybrid cannabis seeds combine the features of Indica and Sativa seeds, potentially with some Ruderalis, it is wise to give your brain a refresh on the differences between those classifications.

Sativa

Sativa strains typically grow in hot, dry climates where the days are sunny and longer. These include large parts of Central America, Asia, and Africa. Sativa plants are mostly tall and thin, featuring thin leaves. They mature later than Indica Strains and grow much taller.

Although definitely not a rule, Sativa strains usually have higher levels of THC and almost no CBD. Sativa is associated with day smoking and being energized, although this depends more on the cannabis strain than the category.

Indica

Indica strains tend to grow in areas with harsher climates. A great example is the Hindu Kush Mountains. Also Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkey, and India. Pure Indica strains are short and stocky with their leaves also being chunky, wide, and broad. Strains with Indica genetics usually grow more quickly than Sativa seeds, but it also produces lots more buds.

Indica strains can feature high levels of CBD and lower levels of THC for medical marijuana. Indica is associated with getting a relaxing buzz, but once again, this changes based on the marijuana strain.

Ruderalis

Ruderalis does well in most environments due to its ability for rapid growth. It will grow in low light or colder climates, such as in the Himalayan mountains of Serbia, Russia, and India, and parts of Eastern Europe. Ruderalis doesn’t often get above 30 cm, but it can be harvested a month after being planted.

Because of its low potency, you will rarely see Ruderalis cannabis being smoked. Breeders often use it to create cannabis hybrids that have some good Ruderalis traits, such as the quick growth cycle or hardiness.

Traits of Hybrids

Because hybrids combine Sativa and Indica seed strains, and maybe some Ruderalis genetics, as well, their characteristics tend to be somewhere in the middle of Sativa and Indica Strain traits. For instance, a Sativa-dominant hybrid will mimic Sativa’s in terms of growth and THC/CBD ratio. An Indica-dominant cannabis hybrid will be closer to an Indica cannabis plant.

Overall, hybrid strains can have any ratio of THC/CBD, any color, and grow in a range of environments. It is most common for hybrids to be specifically bred by humans, so you are more likely to find them in people’s back yards or commercial grows. However, some have cannabis hybrids naturally occurred.
